Peace on the Move? War Resisters' International 20th Triennial Conference at La Marlagne, Belgium, 28 July - 1 August 1991 On its foundation in 1921, after "the war to end all wars", War Resisters' International warned that the war had left the causes of war unchanged and that the punitive "peace" being imposed on Germany was laying the seeds of new wars. Seventy years later, there has been another "war to end all wars". The victors again seek to humiliate the vanquished, and its consequences go far beyond the immediate suffering and destruction it has inflicted. Like the founders of WRI, participants at the 20th Triennial conference will not restrict their discussion to one particular threat nor even to strategies against militarism in general. We will also seek to address the causes of war and see what can be learnt from recent experiences of nonviolent social struggle. What is a Triennial? A WRI Triennial is a conference held every three years to bring together people sharing a commitment to nonviolence and to creating a world without war and oppression. It is a meeting place for people active in peace and nonviolent social change networks from all over the world, somewhere to pool experiences, to exchange ideas, to make contacts, to work out new strategies of cooperation. Participants will come from South and North America, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand, the Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, the Soviet Union, and all over Europe. What will happen? The Triennial will be a mixture of small meetings where everyone can participate and larger sessions. There will be a variety of workshops and two key forums: * Towards a new world order: whose orders? will examine the implications of the Gulf war with speakers from different corners of the world; * From repression to what democracy? will ask participants from Eastern Europe, Latin America and South Africa to discuss issues arising from the process of social change in their countries and the problems now facing them. What theme groups are planned? At the core of the programme will be the following "theme groups". These will all meet on each of the four mornings to pursue their subject in depth. They will have resource people from all over the world. * Arms trade: new trends, new connections * World without enemies * Nonviolent response to ethnic conflict * Experiences of nonviolent training in different cultures * Militarism, poverty and women's liberation * Nonviolent economics: out of debt and dependency * Ecology and war resistance * Nonviolent responses to Middle East conflict * Nonviolent strategy and people's movements * Objection and conscription * International security order: whose orders? * Processes of peace education * Anti-sexist men's responses to patriarchy and militarism Who can come? You can! Any sympathiser with WRI is welcome at the Open Conference, beginning in the evening of 28 July and closing on the evening of 1 August. On 2 - 3 August, the Triennial continues with a "business meeting", open to all members of WRI and its Sections, although only representatives can vote. Where will it be? La Marlagne conference centre is in a wood near Namur, about 60 kilometres from Brussels. It is at the intersection of railway lines and major roads which connect France, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands. How much will it cost? £stg95 (including food and bed) for the Open Conference (Children under two years old: £10; from 2 - 16: £40). £115 for the Open Conference and Business Meeting (Children from 2 - 16: £60).
