ANZUS Peace Force Plowshares Community On the morning of New Year's Day [1991] four people entered Griffiss Air Force Base, in New York state, to enflesh the words of the prophet Isaiah: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks". The four were Ciaron O'Reilly from Brisbane, Moana Cole from New Zealand, and Susan Frankel and William Streit from the United States. They entered Griffiss Air Force Base before dawn, and used their hammers on a B-52 bomber and KC-135 re-fuelling aircraft. They broke up the tarmac using hammers and poured their blood on the aircraft and the tarmac. They were charged with destruction of government property and sabotage. The sabotage charge carries a penalty of ten years imprisonment. They were taken to county jails, were they were held to appear in the Federal Court at Syracuse, NY. At their court appearance in the Syracuse Federal Court before Judge Scanlon, the sabotage charge was withdrawn. They were charged with a felony count of Destruction Of Government Property which carries a penalty of ten years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. They were remanded to appear in court on January 9. Their indictment charges them with damaging the fuel tank of the B-52 which will need to be replaced at a cost of $87,000. After the court appearance the women were sent to the Syracuse Public Safety Building and the men to the Madison County Jail. They will remain there till their trial.
